Making Every Cent Count: Foreign Assistance Cuts and Investing in Women

Foreign Assistance and Investing in WomenToday’s difficult financial climate has world leaders taking a closer look at global economic and policy structures. These leaders also will be making hard choices about how much money to spend and where. Now is the time to help our leaders understand that one of the best investments they can make to spur economic growth – and with the most far-reaching returns – are investments in women. This examination may deliver an unprecedented opportunity to restructure the current foreign assistance systems to make the most cost-effective investments. More than 30 years of evidence shows that investments in women offer the greatest and most far-reaching returns. Join ICRW experts to discuss the potential impact of a foreign assistance agenda that targets women, and its potential effect on reaching the MDG 2015 targets for gender equality.

The Other Half of Gender Equality: Men and Boys (Wed., July 9, 2008)

Gender equality is often seen through the lens of women’s empowerment but working with men to cultivate more gender equitable attitudes and behaviors is also key to overcoming inequality.

How can development initiatives engage men and boys, and how can these efforts be expanded? ICRW researchers Margaret Greene and Aparna Jain will share information about ICRW’s groundbreaking research and experiences from programs that work with men and boys to transform attitudes and behaviors in ways that reduce gender-based domestic violence, improve reproductive health and reinforce men’s positive roles as fathers and partners.

Challenging HIV Stigma and Discrimination

HIV stigma and discrimination undermines prevention, treatment and care, but little is done to combat stigma because of a misinformed view that it cannot be addressed through programs.

ICRW recently concluded projects in Tanzania and Vietnam that measured the effectiveness of programs to reduce HIV stigma in communities and health care settings. The seminar will showcase findings and lessons learned as well as recommendations on how to scale up stigma-reduction programs.

ICRW researchers also will present their work on strategies for anti-stigma programming with UNAIDS and the U.K.’s Department for International Development (DFID).

"If Your Husband Calls, You Have to Go"
Understanding sexual agency among young married women in Bangalore, India

WomenWomen's empowerment initiatives have gained significant traction in the development world, but few studies have focused on a woman’s sexual decision-making capabilities. ICRW, in collaboration with the Women’s Global Health Imperative – RTI International, recently conducted a study that provides tools to define and quantify measurable aspects of women's sexual decision-making.

The study focuses on young married women in low-income neighborhoods of Bangalore, India and showcases the prevalence of sexual agency among these women, as well as environmental factors associated with sexual decision-making. The presentation will include a comparison between sexual and non-sexual dimensions of agency, and how sexual agency differs from other methods of women’s empowerment.
